Crossing Boundaries, Creating Images: In Search of the Prophet Muhammad in Literary and Visual Traditions, Internationale Tagung vom 16. bis 18. Juli 2009 in Florenz

Das Projekt „Crossing Boundaries, Creating Images: In Search of the Prophet Muhammad in Literary and Visual Traditions“ am Kunsthistorischen Institut in Florenz widmet sich in einem breit angelegten Forschungsvorhaben den Darstellungen des Propheten Mohamed in Kunst und Literatur vom Mittelalter bis heute. Dabei wird insbesondere der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit die verschiedenen literarischen Beschreibungen und visuellen Konstruktionen kulturellen, politischen oder religiösen Zwecken dienten.

Für die dreitägige Konferenz wurden Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler verschiedener Disziplinen eingeladen, ihre Forschungen zu Darstellungen des Propheten Mohamed in islamischen wie nichtislamischen Kulturen vorzustellen. Die untersuchten Quellen und Monumente reichen dabei von lateinischen Koranübersetzungen und Lebensbeschreibungen des Propheten Mohamed über mittelalterliche Miniaturen, Buchdrucke, sowie von Skulpturen, Wand- und Glasmalereien bis hin zur Malerei der (europäisch-amerikanischen) Orientalisten und Romantiker. Insbesondere wird sich eine Sektion mit islamischen visuellen und schriftlichen Quellen beschäftigen und an ihnen die Frage erörtern, wie Schriftsteller und Künstler des arabischen, persischen und türkischen Kulturkreises ihre Text-Bildproduktionen als Lobpreisungen verstehen.

Ziel ist es, den historischen Rahmen für die diachronische Rezeption des Islam durch die westliche Welt und die vielfältigen Prozesse der Wissenstransfers zwischen dem christlichen und dem islamischen Kulturkreis zu bestimmen, um eine Geschichte der Rezeption Mohameds anhand seiner textlichen und bildlichen Repräsentationen zu versuchen.
